I have two areas in my back yard that are over grown with weeds and it’s just a mess. I would like to KILL the weeds, put that black tarp down and turn them into beautiful flower beds. The areas are huge one is maybe the size of an average master bedroom with bath and the other a normal size "kids" room each on the left and right side of my screened back porch. My husband isn’t a huge help so I am mostly along in this endeavor. HELP what are the step I can take to clean these places up and my my yard the envy of the neighborhood
Thanks for honest answers that are truly helpful.

Here are some particulars: live in PA, have about a third of an acre with about a 10, 50-60 year old trees in my yard. There’s a mix of grass, moss, weeds, and other organic matter (acorns, twigs, needles, etc) on the ground now. I’m trying to grow grass effectively. This is the third spring we’ve been here, and in the previous two years, I’ve put down random 2-3 pound bags of grass to try to get some of the repair started. It’s pretty spotty and I did notice that this spring, some of the seed that I planted in the past 2 years had surprisingly began to emerge! But it’s still pretty thin.
I’m not interested in tearing up the whole lawn and starting from scratch. I’m interested in perhaps trying some of those new products like Scotts EZ Seed, but want to perhaps mix it with another seed to a) control costs, and b) have a grass that can grow fast, but live throughout the year and remain after the grounds thaw in the winter. Is this doable? If so, what are your tips to help my partial lawn grow into a nice, thick lawn?
BQ, I just spread some weed ‘n feed in my front lawn, how long should I wait to spread seed so that the new seed won’t burn from the fertilizer?
I appreciate the input. But I will also add that my neighbors have GREAT lawns. So my physical attributes don’t matter TOO much. I’m just wondering how I can get over the hump!

I’m currently living in the UK, and I recently moved into a home with a lawn that’s 30 percent moss, and 30 percent weeds. I lived in Arizona prior to the UK, so the lawn-caring thing is new to me, but what I want to do is rip everything up and reseed the grass. What will I need to do this?

I’m a new home owner and have never had to care for grass before. I saw some weeds in my lawn and decided to buy some weed and feed. I went to Home Depot and asked the sales person what weed and feed product he recommended. He asked me what kind of grass I had. I let him know I was not sure, so he recommended I use Sta Green Weed and Feed, which I applied on my St. Augustine lawn (which I figured out later). It’s been a few weeks now and I’ve noticed brown areas in my grass. I was searching the internet trying to research why my grass is dying and noticed that I should not use a herbacide 2, 4-D on St. Augustine grass. I checked the ingredients of the Sta Green Weed and Feed and noticed that it has this 2, 4-D herbacide in it. I’m now worried that my whole lawn is going to turn brown. Is there anything I can do or is it too late? I appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

I have managed to keep most weeds out of my lawn, except ground ivy. I have a neighbor that practgices no weed control ever, so it makes it difficult. I do not need a PERFECT lawn, and I try to use chemical free care, which works great for the most part, but does nothing for ground ivy. I thought about digging up the yard and starting over, it is that bad. With spring coming I plan on using a preemergent, but I can tell that the ground ivy is just ready to be unaffected and go forth and multiply. I don’t WANT to rip the lawn out, because , as I said, the neighbor does not care for their yard, and I will be right back where I am in three years without a line of defense anyway. SSSSso, can I get rid of it? Anyone know my options??? I am absolutely willing to go chemical here. Would prefer not to, but this is war afterall!
Unfortunately, I do not beleive getting help or inline with the neighbors is an option. I have created a barrier around the fenceline which helps some, but I need to deal with the problem I have IN my yard. I need to know what to use to get rid of it. What kind of spray, chemical or non, that is successful at killing this stuff. It is not an english ivy, I had that stuff and ripped it all out, but that wasn’t in the lawn. It is a creeping ground ivy that flowers in the spring and has pretty much taken over huge sections of lawn. Not the entire lawn, but where it is it pretty much killed out the lawn.

I had it laid 2 years ago and until now there have been a dandilion here a clump of grass there at most. This spring I got all sorts of green stuff coming up especially under the over hang of my neighbor’s tree. There is a smal flower bed right near the house but the rest should be nice yellow pebbles and 6 flagstone squares. You can barely see two of the flagstons now for the weeds and grass. I usually pull up what ever stray green pops up but this year I can’t come close to keeping up with it. What can I use to kill this stuff without haveing to take up all the stones and the garden sheeting beneath it? there used to be a lawn beneath and I do not care if it is all killed, except for my flowers . What can I use to kill off the greenery. Im on a fixed income so something do it yourself works best.

I bought my house end of last fall, so I was able to see it needed a lot of work maintenance wise with all of the weeds. Now Spring has rolled around and the dandelions are ALL over along with a bunch of other weeds and quick growing grass. What is a the best natural mix or store bought spray or local lawn care place (I live in Fargo, ND) that I should use?

My yard is full of crab grass and weeds. The prior owners didn’t take care of it.. I want to kill the lawn for the rest of summer and re seed next spring. How do I go about forcing the lawn to go dormant for the next 7 to 8 months

Hello all,
I have a question about a remedy for my lawn. Here’s a quick background. The previous owner of my house did not take care of the lawn at all. I have about a half acre of lawn.
The front yard is mostly St. Augustine grass. At the center it’s St. Augustine, and around the edges there are Bermuda and weeds creeping in. Near the foundation there is some Tall Fescue (that was my bad, I needed a filler grass for dirt spots and I just randomly picked it up at Home Depot). The old owner said he chose St. Augustine for the front because it does well in shade and we have two full grown trees in the front yard that provide some shade.
The side yard is all Bermuda with a lot of weeds. The backyard is the same story, but with way more weeds. In fact it is nearly all weed at this point. He said he chose Bermuda for the back because it is almost all in the sun. P.S. I hate having 2 different kinds of grass.
So I’m looking for advice on the best way to revive the entire yard. I have a friend who does a lot of lawn work who recommended discing up my yard to give it air and break up some of the weeds, smoothing it out with a box blade, and overseeding it with Bermuda along with Scotts turfbuilder. That’s fine and dandy for the backyard and side yard if that is true, but what do I do about my front yard. I have been told St. Augustine does not exist in seed form.
Your wise advice would be appreciated. Please do not offer opinion, I’m looking only for solid, experience filled answers.
Thanks!

I have a huge lawn (~3 acres). I use a kubota to mow it which takes about 2 hours. My wife and I used to pay a lawn service to take care of the weeds and fertilize it. They would spray the entire lawn for weeds then push one those devices that would scatter fertilizer. It got to expensive so we stopped. I would like to do it myself. What kind of weed killer to the lawn services use? It must be available in bulk because it would be 2 expensive and time consuming to keep buying small bottles from a store. Also what is used to fertilize a lawn. How can I do it myself?
